about2About Maroochy River

The original inhabitants of the Maroochy area are the Aboriginal tribes of the Nalbo, Kabi Kabi, Dallambara and Undanbi who hunted and fished the river and ocean for 20,000 years. There are over eighty sites of indigenous cultural importance, including some of which are sacred to local Aboriginal people. Although their exact locations are not generally shared in order to preserve them, many people who travel along the upper reaches of the Maroochy River experience a sense of reverence

About Mudjimba Island

Mudjimba Island sits about 1 kilometre off the coast. It is visible along much of the coastline. According to one Aboriginal legend the Island was the result of an epic battle between two men, Coolum and Ninderry, over a woman called Maroochy. The end result was that Coolum’s head was knocked off and ended up in the ocean, creating Mudjimba Island, and Mount Coolum, seven kilometers to the north, is now flat topped due to the lack of a head. There are various other legends involving Aboriginal women living on the island until old age, hence the name “Old Woman Island”, as it is some times called.
